salamyemen and MAAKUM Foundations commemorate
World Humanitarian Day
Taiz: Special
salamyemen Foundation, Member of the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), and MAAKUM Foundation, Member of the Aden Humanitarian Country Team (AHCT), commemorated World Humanitarian Day under the theme (NoMatterWhat), under the auspices of Taiz Governor, Mr. Nabil Abdu Shamsan, under the supervision of the Social Affairs and Labor Office and Planning and International Cooperation Office – Taiz, and in coordination with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA.
This event stresses that Taiz commemorates the humanitarian action and appreciates all the humanitarian efforts that have enhanced the resilience of the people under siege for over eight years.
The event started by a mourning stand for the soul of the deceased of the humanitarian action, Muayad Hamid, and the officer in charge of investigating the incident, Adnan Al-Muhaya.
In their stand, the humanitarian organizations emphasised their solidarity with humanitarian action and their rejection of any actions that threaten social peace in the governorate or target humanitarian workers and impede the flow of humanitarian aid to the governorate.
For his part, Taiz Governor, Mr. Nabil Shamsan, stressed that Taiz commemorates and embraces all the efforts of humanitarian organisations in the governorate, which suffers catastrophic effects after more than (3000) days of siege. “Taiz today stands to defend itself and its people in the face of the great challenges resulted by the assassination of Mr. Muayad Hamidi,” he said, emphasising that efforts will not stop to secure the work of humanitarian organisations and facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid.
In her speech, Dr. Khadija Al-Hudabi, Chairperson of salamyemen Foundation, welcomed the participants, led by the governor, deputy governors, general directors, heads of the participating organisations and the relevant authorities, and emphasised the role of humanitarian action in Taiz and the importance of continuing the flow of humanitarian aid, as the conflict caused the displacement of more than (280,000) IDPs who lack the most basic necessities of life, and more than (37,000) families suffer from their inability to access safe water to drink. Landmines and the continuation of the war have also caused thousands of deaths and permanent disabilities, as well as the deterioration of the health and educational situation and all the service sectors, which calls for major intervention at the level of emergency response and sustainable development plans.
The Deputy Director of the OCHA Office – Yemen, Mr. Saeed Hirsi, participated via visual communication technology with a speech in which he praised the commemoration of this event and expressed his thanks to the Governor for auspicating it, and thanked the organizers of the event and the participants in it. He also stressed that the interest of the people in Taiz in holding this event reflects their awareness of the value of humanitarian action and its impact on improving people’s lives.
For his part, the Deputy Director of the Social Affairs and Labor Office spoke about the great role played by local NGOs since the outbreak of the war to alleviate the suffering of citizens, emphasising that the role of local NGOs is no less important than the role of INGOs in providing aid in general and empowerment and caring for women and children projects in particular. He also focused on the importance of supervision and coordination with the relevant governmental offices.
Ms. Shaima’a Awn, Director of the Public Relations and International Cooperation at the Planning and International Cooperation Office, stressed the role of the office in creating a matrix of needs and developing response and development plans in the governorate, and she explained the mechanism of communication and coordination between the Planning and International Cooperation Office and the Security Directorate to protect humanitarian workers in the governorate.
The Deputy Director of Security Directorate, Colonel, Anis Al-Shamiri, stressed the role of the Security Directorate in creating a safe environment that allows everyone to move and carry out humanitarian tasks, and that the security level in the governorate has overcome many challenges and threats implemented by parties and people who are trying to reflect a negative image of Taiz, depriving millions of people in need of receiving aid. He also explained that international organizations had great efforts in contributing to building security capacities.
The event was attended by Taiz Governor, Deputy Governors, a number of general directors of executive offices in the governorate, and heads and directors of local and international NGOs. The deputy director of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen (OCHA) and the coordinator of the OCHA office in Taiz, Ms. Amel Al-Aghbari, also participated via visual communication technology.
The event included a short video produced by OCHA on humanitarian action and a representational scene embodying the magnitude of the tragedy in Taiz and highlighting the humanitarian role of local and international NGOs.
